Indigenous knowledge systems development

Indigenous knowledge is the complex interaction of individuals based on shared beliefs and rules in respect of the physical resources, social norms, health, ecosystem, culture and their livelihoods, all of which are a part of their environment both in rural and urban settings. It has been the basis for local level decision making in agriculture, health care, food preparation, education, natural resource management, and a host of other activities. It represents an important component of local and global knowledge.

The work that SMART innovation offers in this field is to bridge the gap between traditional and scientific knowledge in a manner that promotes understanding, raises the profile of indigenous knowledge systems and creates an environment that will advance both knowledge systems for the benefit of South Africa's knowledge economy.
